when looking into analysing a newly released movie , I felt the newest edition of Cinderella would be a good choice. the movie conveys to the audience a strong motif or other wise known as a recurring idea or pattern used . I feel the film also has very strong visual motifs when it comes to styling the characters, which appear to be very periodically based.
The latest interpretation of Walt Disney Cinderella tends to focus on the genres romance and fantasy . Throughout the film it explores the use of love conveying romance and also the use of magic which can sometimes appear as anti realism but still fits in to the fantasy category .
The motif / reoccurring pattern used throughout the film I feel is the quote Cinderella learns from her , mother at the beginning of the film which is to "have courage and to be kind". The quote is repeated throughout the film several times to convey the main characters personality .
The significance of wealth and the difference between upper class and middle and lower class is noticeable through visual motifs , perhaps the setting or the way the character has been styled.
The use of fantasy and believing in magic is another powerful motif used, such as the pumpkin carriage, mouse's turn into horses and the famous glass slippers.
The character which I mainly reflected on throughout the film was the main character Cinderella , at the start of the film happiness is conveyed as the main character as a child with her mother and father living in a lovely farmhouse . Her happiness soon detiorates when her mother dies and her father remarries a jealous stepmother. Once her father dies she soon is pictured as a servant she is then portrayed as lower class and no longer wealthy . The motif to have courage is repeated several times throughout the film. She then meets the king who she sees as a friend, she takes everyone at face value even the animals in the farmhouse. The film finishes by her marrying the prince who she originally saw as her friend and apprentice .The film shows how she develops from a happy child to an unhappy servant to her step mother to a wise and noble royal.

The story plot of Cinderella is she is a happy child with a perfect house and family which detiorates she then I sort treated as a servant and as lower class by her step mother . The typical boy meets girl scenario is used in the middle of the film which conveys my understanding of the genre being romance and ends with the typical fantasy genre of magic being used and good conquering evil.

The visual motifs used in terms of the hair and makeup styling include.
Cinderella at the start of the film as a wealthy child wearing pastel gowns and neat ringlets. Her hair is golden in order to convey to the audience beauty and purity.
When she is portrayed as a servant she is the styled into the same pastel blue ragged and dirty gown with messy braided and curled hair styled into rags the dirty appearance particularly the cinders on her face shows the power of her name cinder Ella. When the fairy godmother transforms Cinderella from ruined pink dress which she was going to wear to the ball into a blue glittering ball gown which still resembles her mother's style. I feel hair and makeup importantly emphasises the main characters personality. When she marries at the end of the film she is pictured in a lace bridal gown with a veil and a bridal updo, this conveys her becoming wise and older .

The stepmother's hair and makeup and costume styling conveys her wealth she is seen wearing velvets ,furs, greens ad lilacs and oversized hats and feathered accessories, her hair is also an auburn colour styled into a side parting with prominent curls , her overall image reminds me of the wealthy Elizabethans .

The prince is styled In blue and creams completed with embroidery. His hair is slightly long and curled slicked back using gel to portray wealth .

The fairy godmother styling I feel has been over exaggerated the dress is oversized , completed with an Elizabethan styled lace collar and the makeup is applied quite thick , the false Hollywood smile tends to complete the over exaggerated look. The actresses hair is also styled into a side parting and neatly curled .

The character styling overall was very periodic and some of the styling also related to the Elizabethan era it also conveyed to the audience a clear understanding of the characters personalities in terms of lower and upper class . It also made some important scenes such as cinderella going from upper class to lower class servant and also the magical ball gown scene . When the step mother is introduced the audience gain a strong negative opinion of her wealth and jealousy almost instantly .
